Interview Preparation
The key to a successful interview is preparation.

Find out as much information as possible about the Company. Look at their website or telephone the company beforehand to ask for any company literature they can send you. Try to find out as much as possible about the background and culture of the company.
If you are attending an interview through an agency they should supply you with a detailed Job Description / Person Specification and information on the company.
Take two copies of your CV (one for you and one for the interviewer), a notebook and pen for notes. Keep papers in a folder or a briefcase.

Questions on the day

Think of any appropriate questions to ask on the day, so when they ask you if you have any questions you are prepared. Do not ask about salary and/or benefits at a first interview unless prompted by the interviewer.

Check beforehand whether it will be a panel interview, group interview or 1-2-1 Interview. Also check to see if you have to take any tests or evaluations, i.e.: typing test, psychometric, personality evaluation etc.

When asked a question, always ensure that you give a demonstrative answer. For example, be sure to relate to a real event in your life where you experienced and dealt with a particular scenario - this proves that you have the experience to do the job.

Why not pre-empt some of the questions your interviewer/s may ask? Without doubt, they will ask you what you know about their company but there are many other questions they may throw at you.

Remember, an interview is a two-way thing and they will want to find out about you as much as you want to find out about the company and the vacancy.

Plan your route

Plan your route carefully, giving yourself plenty of time. You should arrive about 20 minutes early to have a chance to look around and relax.

Body Language and dress code

You should be well groomed with tidy hair, clean clothes and shoes. It is not a good idea to wear strong perfume or too much make-up or jewellery. Always wear a dark smart suit and plain shirt / blouse.

At the interview make sure you give a firm handshake and smile and remember to maintain eye contact to all interviewers.

Be positive, watch your body language. Do not cross your arms but do make frequent eye contact. Listen carefully, do not fidget or interrupt and don't be afraid to sell yourself. Never criticise former employers etc… keep positive and keep replies concise and clear.

Next steps

Ask what the next step would be if you are successful. If you are really interested in the position then let the interviewer know. Last but not least, don't forget to thank the interviewer for their time. It may also be wise to discuss any future holidays that you have coming up in the immediate future to avoid disappointment later.
